The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa was first established in 2017 as the first and largest African contemporary art gallery on the continent. Located near the V&A Waterfront, the building is actually an old grain silo turned architectural masterpiece. Before entering the building, I sat in one of the nearby spinning-top chairs enjoying the company and scenery. Just gazing at Zeitz's exterior was enough to marvel, but better yet were the sights within.
All the photos in this post were taken during my day at the Zeitz MOCAA; credit to the respective creators of the pieces shown below.
This collection spans across varieties of artistry: from an array of paintings big and small, to writings on the wall, diverse photography, educational history sections, sculptures, hanging crimson drapes, age-old coiffure wigs in frames, and even a frightening mythological dragon suspended near the entrance.
The gallery is easy to navigate solo, although guided tours are also available upon booking.
If you find yourself feeling peckish after all the brain food, you might like to scour the delicious options at the V&A Food Market. Alternatively, the Zeitz MOCAA Food restaurant on the 6th floor of the gallery is an esteemed dining destination for any special occasion.
I like to think lots about lots, which is why Zeitz MOCAA might just be my favourite art gallery yet. There is so much to observe and to contemplate in this exhibition, that a full afternoon is definitely needed to embrace it.
It was with a few friends from my sorority that I visited this site, and we prided ourselves in pinning a hand-written note onto the Fulfillment Wall. We wrote that to live a more fulfilling life, we hope to walk with purpose.
I must have taken at least three dozen photos during my visit, and often find myself going back to them whenever I need some inspiration to live intentionally.
What I have shared on this blog post does not do this stunning site justice. You will just need to see it for yourself!
